Understanding the result

The result is the number of days in the chosen month of the chosen year. For February the tool also states whether the year is a leap year and what the length would be in the other kind of year.

How many days does each month have?

Seven months have 31 days (January, March, May, July, August, October and December), four have 30 (April, June, September and November) and February has 28 or 29.

The rhyme "thirty days hath September, April, June and November" covers the 30-day months. February is the only one that varies from year to year.

How it works

The tool looks up the month's standard length and, for February, checks the Gregorian leap-year rule for the year: divisible by 4, except century years not divisible by 400.

February 2024

29 days. 2024 is a leap year.

February 2023 and February 1900

Both have 28 days. 2023 is not divisible by 4, and 1900 is a century year that is not divisible by 400.

February 2000

29 days: 2000 is divisible by 400, so it is a leap year despite being a century year.

Things to keep in mind

  • The Gregorian calendar is used for all years, including before 1582.
  • To see the whole month laid out with weeks, open the Calendar tool. To find the first and last day of a month, use Start and End of Period.
  • February is the only month whose length changes, so a date such as 29 February exists only in leap years. Tools that add months to a date deal with this by moving to the last day of a shorter month.
