Understanding the result

The main figure is the number of business days in the range. Beneath it you can see the total calendar days, how many weekend or other non-working days were removed, and how many of your holidays fell on working days and were excluded.

The four figures always add up: business days plus weekend days plus holidays equals calendar days.

What is a business days calculator?

A business days (or working days) calculator counts the days in a range on which work normally happens. It is used for delivery estimates, notice periods, invoice terms, project plans and any deadline expressed in working days.

This tool does not assume a country's public holidays, because they differ by country, region and year. You supply the holidays that apply to you.

How it works

Every day in the range is checked in turn. It is skipped if its weekday is not one of the working days you selected (Monday to Friday by default) and skipped if it appears in your holiday list. Everything else is counted.

The range starts on the start date and runs up to, but not including, the end date. So Monday to the following Monday is 5 business days. Tick "Include end date" to count the end date as well.

If the end date is earlier than the start date, the two are swapped and the note tells you so. The holiday list accepts dates written as YYYY-MM-DD, separated by new lines, commas or spaces.

Examples

Monday to Monday

From Monday 1 January 2024 to Monday 8 January 2024 there are 7 calendar days, 2 weekend days and 5 business days. With "Include end date" the count is 6.

Around Christmas 2024

From 23 December to 31 December 2024 with 25 and 26 December as holidays: 8 calendar days, 2 weekend days, 2 holidays and 4 business days (23, 24, 27 and 30 December).

A Sunday to Thursday week

Untick Friday and tick Sunday to model a Sunday-to-Thursday working week. Friday and Saturday are then treated as the weekend.

Things to keep in mind

  • A holiday only changes the result if it falls on a working day. A holiday on a Saturday is ignored when Saturday is already a non-working day.
  • Different organisations count "business days" differently: some include the start date, some the end date, some neither. Check the convention for your case and set "Include end date" to match.
  • Half days, company closures and regional holidays must be added to the holiday list to be reflected.
  • Banks and government bodies may define business days by their own calendars.

How many business days are between two dates?

Does it include public holidays?

Only the ones you enter. The tool never assumes holidays for a country, so results are never wrong because of an incorrect assumption about where you are.

Is the start date counted?

Yes, if it is a working day and not a holiday. The end date is only counted if you tick "Include end date".

Can I use a working week other than Monday to Friday?

Yes. Tick the days that count as working days, for example Sunday to Thursday.
