Understanding the result

The four boxes show the time remaining split into days, hours, minutes and seconds. They add up to the exact time until your target moment, and they update once a second while the page is visible.

If the target is in the past, the same boxes show how long ago it was and the heading changes to "Time since".

What is a countdown calculator?

A countdown shows the time left until a chosen moment such as a holiday, a trip, a launch or a deadline. It is also the quickest way to answer "how many days until" a date.

Quick-date buttons fill in fixed-date occasions such as Christmas and New Year with the next occurrence.

How it works

The target date and time are read in your device's time zone and converted to an exact moment using your browser's time zone data. The countdown is the difference between that moment and the current time, split into days, hours, minutes and seconds.

If you leave the time empty, the target is midnight at the start of the chosen date, so "25 December" means the moment 25 December begins.

The display refreshes once per second and pauses while the tab is in the background, which keeps CPU use very low.

Examples

Counting down to Christmas morning

Choose the Christmas quick date and set the time to 09:00. On 20 December at 09:00 the countdown reads 5 days, 0 hours, 0 minutes and 0 seconds.

A countdown that crosses a clock change

In New York, from midnight on 7 March 2026 to midnight on 9 March 2026 is 1 day and 23 hours, because clocks move forward on 8 March and that day is only 23 hours long. The countdown reports real elapsed time, not the clock-face difference.

Things to keep in mind

  • Times are in your device's time zone, not the time zone of the event. For an event in another place, convert the time first with the Time Zone Converter.
  • A "day" in the result is 24 hours of elapsed time. Around a daylight saving change the number of days shown can differ from the number of calendar dates crossed.
  • The countdown is only as accurate as your device's clock.
  • Fixed-date presets do not include holidays that move each year, such as Easter or Thanksgiving. Enter those dates yourself.
